The Importance of Caribbean Art Stories
"The story of the Caribbean people is unique. The Caribbean is essentially composed of Africans taken against their will to faraway lands to work as slaves by European colonizers and then later indentured labourers from Asia. This has resulted in both a story of human struggle and love. A tragedy and simultaneously a victory about the resilience of mankind."
Michele Lee Lambert is a Jamaican artist currently based in Kingston, Jamaica. Working with photography, vintage images, encaustic, oil paint and cold wax, her work uses the stories of ancestors to convey present day experiences. Drawn to the soiled and rusted, Lee Lambert explores the stories that lie behind decay and depicts the lingering aesthetics that are only developed through the passage of time. Through her work, she connects the past to the present, so that the viewer comes face to face with their own stories.
Lee Lambert's work was most recently exhibited in the National Gallery of Jamaica Summer Exhibition in 2019, and she has been awarded numerous medals in the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) Visual Arts Competition in the mediums of painting and photography, as well as the Third Place Jury Prize in 2017. In 2017, Lee Lambert had a major solo exhibition at Grosvenor Galleries in Kingston, titled A Three- Thousand- Year Journey: Encaustic Art to Digital Photography.
